What is a Family Medicine Physician?
A family doctor is a professional who takes care of the entire family. It
is very important for them to get to know the patient and how they fit
into the family unit as a whole. It is a known fact that family
dynamics affect how we function as individuals. We take care of the
medical and psychological aspects of our patients and their families. The scope of Family Medicine encompasses Women’s health, Pediatrics, Men’s health and Geriatrics.
More importantly, we will consult specialists if necessary in order to
bring you quality medical care.
Our training includes 4 years of college, a one year internship
and two years of residency There is also an option to do a fellowship
to further specialize in Sports medicine, geriatrics, or adolescent
medicine. Family doctors are required to complete continuing medical education (CME) in any topic such as Pediatrics, Women’s Health, and Men’s Health to further expand their knowledge base. All family physicans have to recertify at specifically
designated times in order to a maintain good standing with the American Academy of Family Physicians and
Board of Family Medicine.
Finding a family doctor that you communicate well with is important. It's also important to realize that this relationship takes time, but is well worth the
effort.
